Does Instagram Notify When You Unfollow Someone? (2026)
Updated 2 August 2026
The short answer: no. Instagram never sends a notification when you unfollow someone — not a push alert, not an email, nothing. The unfollow happens silently. But that doesn't mean it's invisible, and the same is true in reverse: people unfollow you silently all the time. Here's exactly how it works in 2026.
What the other person can (and can't) see
When you unfollow someone, nothing appears in their notifications. However, they can still find out in two ways: by manually checking their followers list for your name, or by using a tool that compares their follower list over time. If they look at your profile, the button will show “Follow” instead of “Following” — a giveaway only if they go looking.
The same applies to you. If someone unfollows you, Instagram won't tell you. Your follower count just quietly ticks down, and unless you keep a spreadsheet of your followers, you'll never know who left.
What about removing a follower?
Instagram also lets you removea follower (from your followers list, tap the three dots next to their name). This is silent too — the removed person gets no notification. They'd only notice if they visited your profile and saw they were no longer following you.
How to see who unfollowed you — without risking your account
Because Instagram doesn't notify anyone about unfollows, dozens of “who unfollowed me” apps have sprung up — and most of them ask for your Instagram password, which can get your account flagged or banned. The safe method uses Instagram's own data export instead:
- Download your Instagram data export (Followers and Following, JSON format) — it usually arrives within 10–20 minutes.
- Upload the ZIP to UnfollowChecker. Everything is processed in your browser — no login, no password, and your data never leaves your device.
- Instantly see everyone you follow who doesn't follow you back.
The bottom line
Unfollowing on Instagram is always silent, in both directions. If you want to know where you stand — who quietly dropped you, and who never followed back in the first place — the data export method is the only way that doesn't involve handing your password to a stranger. Check yours free.
