Why Instagram hides unfollows

Instagram deliberately keeps unfollowing quiet. Telling people who left would make unfollowing feel confrontational, and Instagram would rather you unfollow freely than keep following accounts you've lost interest in. So the app gives you two weak signals only: your follower count, which moves for lots of reasons, and the state of the Follow button when you open someone's profile. Neither tells you who left.

The safe method: compare two data exports

1. Take a snapshot today.Request your data export from Instagram (Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information). Choose JSON, tick only Followers and following, and set the range to All time. Step-by-step: how to download your Instagram data export.
2. Save the followers list somewhere. The export ZIP contains a file called followers_1.json (large accounts get several numbered files). Keep the ZIP, or upload it to UnfollowChecker and download the CSV so you have a dated copy.
3. Wait. A week is enough to catch the people who left after a specific post. A month gives you a clearer picture of steady churn.
4. Take a second snapshot the same way, then compare. Any username in the old followers list that is missing from the new one has unfollowed you (or deactivated, see below).

To compare by hand, open both CSV files in a spreadsheet, put the old list in column A and the new list in column B, and use a lookup such as =COUNTIF(B:B, A2)=0 to flag names that disappeared. For a few hundred followers this takes a minute.

Not everyone missing has unfollowed you

A username can vanish from your followers list for reasons that aren't a decision to leave:

• Deactivated or deleted accounts. The person paused or closed their account. If they come back, they reappear as a follower without re-following.

• They blocked you.Blocking removes the follow in both directions. Their profile will show "User not found" when you open it while logged in.
• Username changes. The export lists the current username. If someone renamed their account between snapshots, they look like one unfollow and one new follower. Their profile link in the export still works, so you can check.

Why "unfollowed me" apps are a bad trade

Apps that promise push notifications when someone unfollows you can only do it one way: they log into Instagram as you, on their servers, and pull your follower list every few hours. Instagram treats that as automated access, which breaks its terms and triggers the same detection that catches bots. Quick checks for one specific person

If you only want to know whether one person still follows you, you don't need an export. Open their profile and look at the button: Follow backmeans they follow you and you don't follow them. If you follow them, open your own profile, tap Followers, and search for their username in the list. If they're not there, they're not following you. This works but doesn't scale past a handful of people, which is where the export comes in.
