Who doesn't follow me back on Instagram?

Short answer

Instagram has no built-in list of who doesn't follow you back, but your own data export contains both your followers and your following lists. Download it (Accounts Centre → Export your information, Followers and following, JSON), upload the ZIP here, and you'll see everyone you follow who doesn't follow you — without giving anyone your password.

An Instagram non-follower is an account you follow that does not follow you back; the only way to list them without breaking Instagram's rules is to compare the followers and following files in your official data export.

How it works

  1. 1

    Request your Instagram data export

Open Instagram → your profile → menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export. Choose only Followers and following, date range All time, format JSON, and Download to device.

  2. 2

    Download the ZIP

Instagram emails you when it's ready — usually 10–20 minutes for a followers-only export. Download the ZIP from the email link or from the same Export your information screen.

  3. 3

    Drop the ZIP here

Upload the ZIP on this page. The comparison runs in your browser; the file is never sent anywhere. You see your count immediately.

No login. No password. Your export never leaves your browser.

Why Instagram won't just tell you

Open anyone's profile and the button says Follow back if they follow you and you don't follow them. The reverse — you follow them, they don't follow you — is never labelled. Instagram's own product decision is to show you how to grow your following, not how to prune it, so there is no screen, filter, or Insights chart for non-followers. Business and Creator accounts get follower growth totals, but never names.

That gap is what every "unfollowers app" sells. Most of them fill it by asking for your username and password and then logging in as you to scrape your lists. That works until it doesn't: logging in from an unknown server is exactly what triggers Instagram's Action Blocked message and, repeated, a ban. The export route gets you the same two lists with none of that risk.

What you get from one export

The ZIP Instagram sends you contains followers_1.json (split into followers_2.json, followers_3.json and so on for larger accounts) and following.json. Each is a plain list of usernames with the date the follow happened. UnfollowChecker reads all the parts, builds two sets, and shows you the difference in three directions:

  • Not following you back — accounts in your following list that aren't in your followers list. This is the list this page is about.
  • Fans — accounts in your followers list that aren't in your following list. See who follows you that you don't follow back.
  • Mutuals — accounts in both. See your mutual followers.
  • Free CSV downloads of your raw followers and following lists, with follow dates, no payment needed.

How accurate is it?

The export is the same data Instagram uses to draw your followers list, so the comparison is exact for the moment the export was generated. Two things can make the number look different from what you expect. First, accounts that were deactivated or renamed after you followed them appear in following.json under a placeholder; UnfollowChecker excludes those and tells you how many it skipped. Second, if you chose a date range shorter than All time, older follows are simply missing from the files — re-export with All time and the count corrects itself.

What the export does not contain is engagement. It can't tell you who among your followers never likes or comments — for that, see what ghost followers are and why no export-based tool can find them.

Doing it manually instead

For a small account you can skip tools entirely: open your Following list, tap each account, and look at their Followers list for your own name. Instagram's search box inside a followers list makes each check a few seconds. At 50 accounts that's a coffee break; at 500 it's an afternoon, and by the time you finish, the first answers may have changed. The export method takes the same two minutes whether you follow 80 people or 8,000.

What to do with the list

Finding non-followers and unfollowing them are two separate decisions. Plenty of accounts you follow — news, brands, people you admire — were never going to follow you back, and that's fine. Sort the list by the date you followed them: the ones from years ago that you'd forgotten about are usually the easy unfollows. If you do clean up, keep to Instagram's unofficial pace — see the Instagram unfollow limit — because mass-unfollowing quickly is the second most common trigger for an action block after password apps.

If you want to know who *used* to follow you and left, that's a different question that needs two exports: the who unfollowed me tool handles it, free.

What this tool can't do

It can't check someone else's account — only an export you download from your own. It can't unfollow anyone for you; automation is what gets accounts banned, so you unfollow by hand in the app. And it can't update live: it shows the state of your account at the moment Instagram generated the export. Frequently asked questions

How can I see who doesn't follow me back on Instagram for free?

Download your Instagram data export (Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information, choose Followers and following, JSON, All time), then upload the ZIP to UnfollowChecker. Seeing how many accounts don't follow you back is free; the full list of usernames is a one-time $2.99.

Is there a way to see who doesn't follow you back without an app?

Yes. The data export method needs no app: Instagram's own export plus a web page that compares the two lists in your browser. You never install anything or share a password.

Will the people I check know?

No. Downloading your own data and comparing the lists is invisible to everyone else. Nobody is notified, and nothing appears on their profile.

Does it work on a private account?

Yes. The export contains your complete followers and following lists regardless of whether your account is private or public.

Why does my count differ from what Instagram shows?

Deactivated and renamed accounts are excluded, and an export with a date range shorter than All time is missing older follows. Re-export with All time if the numbers look low.

Can I see who doesn't follow me back on Threads or TikTok?

Yes. Threads exports come from the same Accounts Centre (choose your Threads profile), and TikTok's Download your data produces a JSON file. The Threads and TikTok checkers on this site work the same way.

Ready to check your own account?

Free to see your count. Full list of usernames unlocks for $2.99.
