Instagram Data Export Taking Too Long? How Long It Takes and How to Speed It Up

What decides the wait

Instagram builds each export as a batch job. The queue time is roughly proportional to how much data has to be gathered, so the options you pick matter more than anything else:

• Followers and following only, JSON: a few minutes to half an hour, even for accounts with tens of thousands of followers. The lists are plain text.
• Several categories, or messages: a few hours. Message history is large and slow to assemble.
• All of your information, high media quality: up to 48 hours. Instagram's own wording says it can take up to 14 days, which covers very large accounts and busy periods.

Date range also matters. "All time" on a ten-year-old account with media included is the slowest possible request. For follower lists it makes no difference to speed, and you need All time to get the complete list, so keep it there.

Where the export actually appears

The email is a courtesy, not the only way to get the file. When the export is ready it is listed in the app under Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Open that page and you'll see each request with its status: pending, available, or expired. If it says available, tap Download and you're done, no email needed.

The link stays live for a few days, then expires. If you wait longer than that you'll need to request again.

If it's been over an hour and nothing has arrived

1. Check the Download your information page described above. Most "missing" exports are sitting there already.
2. Check spam and promotions.The email comes from a Meta address and is often filtered. Search your inbox for "your Instagram information".
3. Confirm the email on your account. Instagram sends the link to the address in Accounts Center, which may be an old one. You can also choose to receive it as a notification in the app instead.
4. Check what you requested. If the pending request says All of your information, cancel it and submit a new one with only Followers and following ticked. The smaller request often arrives before the big one would have.
5. Don't submit the same request repeatedly. Duplicate requests join the same queue and can push your wait back rather than forward.

The settings that get you a fast export

If your goal is to check your followers, this combination is the quickest and produces a ZIP that any export-based checker can read:

• Some of your information, not all
• Tick only Followers and following
• Format: JSON (HTML works too, but JSON is smaller)
• Media quality: low (there's no media in this export anyway)
• Date range: All time

Why there's no way to skip the wait

Apps that promise instant results without an export are logging into your account to scrape the lists, which is against Instagram's terms and a common cause of action blocks.
