How to See Your Mutual Followers on Instagram (Full List, 2026)

Two things Instagram calls "mutual"

The word gets used for two different things, which is why searches for it lead to confusing answers:

• Mutuals with another person.On someone else's profile, "Followed by alice, bob and 12 others" means those accounts you follow also follow that person. Tap their Followers list and a Mutual section appears at the top. This is easy to see in the app and is the only mutual list Instagram provides.
• Your own mutual follows.The set of accounts where the follow goes both ways between you and them. Instagram has no screen for this. It's the list most people actually want when they ask the question, and it's what the rest of this guide is about.

Checking one person in the app

For a single account, open their profile. If the button says Following, you follow them. To see whether they follow you, go to your own profile, tap Followers and search their username. Present in both places means mutual. This takes about ten seconds per person, which is fine for three people and useless for three hundred.

Getting the full list from your data export

1. Request your export: Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information. Choose JSON, tick only Followers and following, date range All time. Walkthrough: how to download your Instagram data export.
2. Download the ZIP when Instagram emails you, usually within half an hour for this selection.
3. Inside are followers_1.json and following.json. Every username that appears in both files is a mutual follow.

Why the mutual list is worth having

• Close Friends and story audiences. Mutuals are the natural starting point for a Close Friends list. Instagram makes you pick them one at a time; a list makes that quick.
• Cleaning up your following. Knowing who is mutual tells you who is not. If you plan to unfollow non-followers, the mutual list is the set you keep. See should you unfollow people who don't follow back.
• Real reach. Mutuals are the accounts most likely to see and engage with your posts, because the relationship goes both ways. The size of that group is a better health check than your raw follower count.
• Switching or merging accounts. If you start a new account, the mutual list is who to tell first.
