Should You Unfollow People Who Don't Follow You Back?

Good reasons to cut non-followers

• Your feed improves. Every account you follow competes for feed space. Dropping dead weight means more of what you actually want to see.
• Follow-for-follow accounts played you. Accounts that followed, waited for the follow-back, then quietly unfollowed are gaming their ratio at your expense. There's no reason to keep holding up your end.
• Your ratio reads better.Fair or not, a following count far above your follower count reads as spammy — to people checking out your profile, and to brands if you're building a creator account.
• You're near the follow cap.At Instagram's 7,500 limit, every non-follower you keep is a slot you can't give to someone new.

Good reasons to keep some of them

Reciprocity is the wrong test for accounts you follow for the content. News accounts, artists, athletes, meme pages, that friend who posts twice a year — none of them will ever follow you back, and none of them should be cut for it. The question isn't “do they follow me?” but “would I miss this account if it disappeared from my feed?” If yes, keep it and move on.

A quick keep-or-cut test

Going through a few hundred names one by one is where most cleanups stall, so give yourself a rule you can apply in a few seconds per account. Three questions do most of the work:

1. Did I follow this account for its content?If you can name what they post and you still want it, keep them and stop thinking about it. Reciprocity doesn't apply.
2. Have I engaged with them in the last six months? A like, a comment, a story reply, a DM. If the answer is no and question one was also no, they are a cut.
3. Did they follow me and then unfollow? If you remember following them back and they have since left, that was a follow-for-follow play. Cut without guilt.

Anything that passes question one stays; anything that fails all three goes; the few in the middle are the only ones worth a moment's thought. The non-followers list can be sorted by the date you followed each account, which makes question two faster: the oldest follows you can't place are almost always cuts. It also helps to look at the other side of the ledger. Your mutual followers are the accounts you keep by default, and seeing how large that group is compared with your non-followers tells you whether the cleanup is a trim or an overhaul.

How to do the cleanup properly
