Instagram Export Stuck on Pending in Accounts Center? What's Normal and When to Act
Updated 12 October 2026 · Last verified against a real Instagram export 12 October 2026
Pending is normal. A request limited to Followers and following usually shows Pending for 10 to 20 minutes before it flips to Available. A full export of everything on your account can sit there for hours and, with media and All time, up to 48 hours. It only counts as stuck when a small request has been Pending for well over an hour, or a full one for more than two days. This guide is about that status row specifically: what it means, how long it should last, and when to stop waiting and cancel.
What Pending means on the Export your information screen
The screen lives at Settings and privacy → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information. Below the Create export button it lists every request you have made recently, each with a profile name, the date, and a status. The statuses you will see are Pending, Available, and Expired. Pending means Instagram has accepted the request and the job is either queued or actively being assembled. It is not an error, a review, or a sign that anything needs your attention; there is nothing to approve and no verification step hiding behind it.
Behind the scenes Instagram builds each export as a batch job that gathers every record you asked for, writes it into the folder structure, and compresses it. The queue is shared, so a small request still waits its turn, but the job itself is quick once it runs. That is why timings depend almost entirely on how much you selected.
Realistic timings by request size
- Followers and following only, JSON: 10 to 20 minutes is typical; up to about an hour during busy periods. Account size barely matters because the lists are small text.
- Several categories without messages or media: 30 minutes to a couple of hours.
- Messages included: a few hours. Conversation history is the slowest non-media category to assemble.
- All of your information, high media quality, All time:commonly 24 to 48 hours. Instagram's own notice says up to 14 days, which covers very old accounts with large media libraries.
If your request is in the first bucket and has been Pending for more than an hour, something is off and it is worth acting. If it is in the last bucket, Pending at the 20-hour mark is expected. The general question of how long exports take, including the email side, is covered in Instagram data export taking too long.
Why it's slow
Three settings drive almost all of the wait. The first is the scope: All of your information versus Some of your information with a handful of boxes ticked. The second is media quality, because Higher quality means every photo and video is fetched at full resolution and packaged. The third is Date range, which only matters when media is involved; All time on a decade of posts is far more work than All time on a followers list, which takes no longer than Last month.
Account age and activity amplify these. A ten-year-old account with thousands of posts and long message threads can produce a multi-gigabyte archive, and Pending on that is measured in days. None of it is needed for a follower check, which is why the followers-only path exists.
What to do while waiting
- Leave the request alone. Closing the app, logging out, or switching accounts does not cancel it.
- Check the Export your information screen rather than refreshing your inbox. The row updates to Available before the email arrives, and the email is sometimes filtered to spam or sent to an old address.
- Don't submit the same request again. Duplicates queue behind the original and you end up with two Pending rows and no faster result.
- Confirm which profile the request names. If it is the wrong account, that is a reason to cancel now rather than wait.
When to cancel and re-request smaller
Cancel if any of these are true: the pending request is for All of your information and you only wanted followers; a followers-only request has sat on Pending for over an hour; or the request is for the wrong profile. Open the row on the Export your information screen, choose the cancel or delete option, and confirm. Then tap Create export, pick the profile, choose Export to device, open Customise information and tick only Followers and following, set Format: JSON, Date range: All time, and Media quality: Lower quality, then Start export.
The smaller request routinely finishes before the large one would have. Each setting is explained in how to download your Instagram data export. Cancelling has no effect on your account beyond discarding the unfinished archive.
When it flips to Available: the 4-day clock
Once the status reads Available, a download button appears on the row and the email goes out. From that moment the file is kept for 4 days, after which the row changes to Expired and the link stops working. People who wait for the email, miss it, and come back a week later find the export gone and have to start over. Download as soon as you see Available; what to do if you were too late is in export download link expired.
With the ZIP on your device, upload it as-is to the who doesn't follow me back checker. It reads the followers and following files directly from the archive in your browser, so the twenty minutes of Pending is the only wait involved.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an Instagram export stay on Pending?
Around 10 to 20 minutes for a request limited to Followers and following, a few hours if you included messages or several categories, and up to 48 hours for all of your information with media. Instagram's own wording allows up to 14 days.
Can I cancel a pending Instagram export?
Yes. On the Export your information screen, open the pending request and choose the option to cancel or delete it. Then create a smaller request with only Followers and following ticked, which usually finishes far sooner.
Does submitting the export again make it faster?
No. A second identical request joins the same queue behind the first one. If the original is large, cancel it before submitting a smaller one, otherwise you are waiting on both.
Where does the export go once it is no longer Pending?
The row changes to Available on the Export your information screen and Instagram emails a link to the address on your account. Both point at the same file and both expire 4 days later.
