Best free Instagram unfollow checkers: what's actually free

Short answer

Only one tool on this page is free in the ordinary sense and never asks for your password. UnfollowChecker gives you the non-follower count, your followers and following as CSVs, and a two-export unfollowers comparison free, with the full non-follower list a one-time $2.99. Everything else here is a free preview of a subscription, and the login app at the bottom is a preview of a subscription that also wants your password.

"Free" means four different things in this category, and the App Store and Google Play let all four use the word. There is free with nothing to pay, ever. There is free with ads. There is a free preview, where you see a count or a few names and pay to see the rest. And there is a free trial, which is a subscription with a three-day fuse; weekly plans are the most common complaint in reviews across the whole category. This page sorts five tools into those buckets and says exactly what you get before money changes hands.

The baseline everything is measured against is Instagram itself. Your data export is free, official, and contains your full followers and following lists, which is why the fully free tools are all export readers: they have no servers scraping Instagram to pay for. The tools with subscriptions are paying for either a tracking infrastructure that watches public profiles over time, or for logging in as you, and the price reflects that, not the difficulty of comparing two lists.

Ranking follows how we test: tools that never see your password rank above tools that log in as you, and within each tier we rank on how much is genuinely free. If you only want the free route explained once, the free unfollow checker page does that; this one is about which tools keep the promise.

  1. 1

    UnfollowChecker

Works from your data export, no login · Web, any device

UnfollowChecker (this site) is free for everything except one list. Upload the ZIP from your Instagram export and, without paying or signing in, you get the exact count of accounts that don't follow you back, downloadable CSVs of your full followers and following lists with follow dates, and the two-export unfollowers comparison that shows who left and who arrived between any two exports. All of it runs in your browser; the file never leaves your device and there is no account to create.

The one paid thing is the full list of usernames who don't follow you back: a one-time $2.99, with a $3 add-on for fans and mutuals. No subscription, no renewal, no trial that turns into a charge. We put it first because the free tier is a complete, usable tool rather than a teaser, and because the CSVs alone let you do the comparison in a spreadsheet for nothing if you'd rather.

What it can't do: there are no live alerts and it can't look at anyone else's account, because it is never connected to Instagram. Best for: anyone who wants the honest free tier, their raw lists as CSV, and a one-off price for the rest.

    Unfollowers Tracker (unfollowerstrack.com)

Scans profiles through Instagram's private API · Web

Unfollowers Tracker (Unfollow Tracker for Insta on Google Play) is free with ads. It reads the JSON from your Instagram export on the phone, never asks for a login, and produces a report of who unfollowed you, who doesn't follow back and how your count has moved. The basic report is free; additional reports are in-app purchases.

That makes it the free-with-ads bucket, which is a fair trade for an installed Android app that never touches your account. The caveats are that the free report is the basic one, it is Android-only, and keeping it current means a new export each time. Reviews are thin because the app is young, so the long-term record isn't established yet.

Best for: Android users who want an app icon and are happy to sit through ads instead of paying. The Unfollowers Tracker comparison shows what the paid reports add.

    DolphinRadar

Scans profiles through Instagram's private API · Web

DolphinRadar is a web-based tracker that needs no login: you type a public Instagram username (your own or anyone else's) and it reads the public follower data from its servers. The free preview is real: it shows who doesn't follow that account back and the mutual connections, with no account or card required. The full unfollower history, and continued monitoring with weekly reports and email alerts, is paid: a $9.99 one-time option, or Guardian Mode at $8.90 a month or less on annual billing.

It is a preview, then, not a free tool, and it only works on public accounts. The flip side is that it offers something export readers can't: it can watch an account over time without you doing anything, and it can look at accounts that aren't yours. It passes the password check because it never asks for your credentials; what it does with Instagram's public data happens on DolphinRadar's side, not in your account.

Best for: checking a public account's non-followers once, free, or paying for ongoing reports on an account you don't control. See the DolphinRadar comparison.

    UnfollowCheck (unfollowcheck.com)

Logs in to Instagram on your behalf · Web, iOS

UnfollowCheck is a no-password iPhone app (with a limited web version) that tracks your public profile by handle and pushes a notification when someone unfollows you. The free tier is limited, and the real product is a subscription: a $4.99 weekly option, Pro bundles from $8.99 to $34.99, a $79.99 lifetime unlock, or $36 a year for web Pro. Reviews mention being charged after a free trial the reviewer believed they had cancelled; the developer notes that trials renew unless cancelled 24 hours before the end.

It ranks here, not higher, because this is a page about what is free, and the free tier is a preview. It is above the login apps because it never asks for your password and only works on public profiles, which also means it is useless for a private account. For what the subscription buys, the alerts and widget are genuinely good.

Best for: people who want unfollow notifications on a public account and accept a weekly or yearly fee. If you only want the list once, the UnfollowCheck alternative page is cheaper.

    FollowMeter for Instagram

Needs your Instagram password · iOS, Android

FollowMeter is free to download on iPhone and Android, and that is where free ends. It requires your Instagram username and password, and reviews consistently mention features that used to be free moving behind the Plus subscription: $3.99 a week, $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year, with a one-off $8.99 Pro and $1.99 feature packs on top. The free tier shows enough to make you want the rest.

It is last because it fails both halves of this page's test: the free tier is a teaser, and getting even that requires logging a third party into your account. Reviews mention Instagram "suspicious activity" warnings and temporary restrictions after using it. What it does offer, for the money and the risk, is live history and alerts.

Best for: nobody looking for a free tool. If you came here from a FollowMeter trial, the FollowMeter alternative page gets you the same list from an export for nothing.

How this list was made

For each tool we signed up or installed with a test account, used only the free tier, and recorded exactly where the first payment prompt appeared and what it asked for, alongside the other four checks on our how we test page: password requests, private-API use, what recent reviews report, and what the tool actually shows. We accept no affiliate commission or payment from anyone listed, we never use a real personal account, and we don't assign star ratings. Prices are as of 12 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free way to see who doesn't follow me back on Instagram?

Yes. Request your free data export from Instagram, then give the ZIP to UnfollowChecker (free count, free CSVs, free unfollowers comparison). Or open the two JSON files in a spreadsheet and compare them yourself.

Which free unfollow checkers don't need my password?

UnfollowChecker and Unfollowers Tracker read your data export and never ask for a login. DolphinRadar and UnfollowCheck work from your public profile without a password. FollowMeter requires your Instagram username and password.

Why do most unfollow checkers charge weekly?

Weekly plans look cheap in the listing and renew often. They are the most common complaint in reviews across the category. The only fees on this page that don't renew are UnfollowChecker's $2.99 and DolphinRadar's $9.99 one-time options.

Can I get my followers list as a free CSV?

Yes. UnfollowChecker converts the followers and following JSON files from your export into CSVs with follow dates, free, in your browser. The export followers list guide shows the steps.

Are free Instagram unfollow checkers safe?

Free export readers are the safest tools available: nothing connects to your account. The risk comes from login, not price. A free app that wants your Instagram password is riskier than a paid one that doesn't.
