Instagram unfollow checker without your password

Short answer

UnfollowChecker never asks for your Instagram password, username or login, because it doesn't need them. You sign in to Instagram itself — in the app or at accountscenter.instagram.com — to request your data export, and the only thing this site ever sees is the ZIP you choose to open. It's the route Meta built for you to get your own data.

A password-free Instagram unfollow checker is one that never asks for your Instagram credentials, because it works from the data export Meta lets every user download rather than from a login session on someone else's server.

How it works

  1. 1

Request your export from Instagram, not from us

Sign in to Instagram where you normally do. Open Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export, choose Download to device, select Followers and following, All time and JSON, and start the export. Your password goes to Meta and nowhere else.

  2. 2

    Download the ZIP

Meta emails the link in about 10–20 minutes; it stays valid for four days. Save the ZIP to your phone or computer. If Instagram asks you to confirm your password before the download, that's Instagram's own screen.

  3. 3

    Open it here

Upload the ZIP on this page. It's read by JavaScript in your browser tab; open your browser's Network panel and you'll see no request carrying the file. The count appears free; the full list is $2.99.

No login. No password. Your export never leaves your browser.

Every login-based checker is a credential handover

When an unfollowers app shows an Instagram login form, what happens next is simple and rarely explained. Your username and password are sent to the app developer's server. That server logs in to Instagram as you and receives a session token, which it keeps so it can keep reading your account later; many store the password itself so they can log in again when the token expires. From that moment the developer — and anyone who breaches them — can act as you: read messages, follow, post, change the email on the account.

The tell is two-factor authentication. If an app asks you to type in the code Instagram just texted you, it's because the app's server is logging in right now and Instagram challenged it. You're handing over the one thing designed to stop exactly that. If you reuse the password anywhere else, the exposure spreads with it. Our guide to whether Instagram unfollow checkers are safe covers what people have actually reported after doing this.

What Instagram's terms actually say

Instagram's terms prohibit sharing your password or letting anyone else access your account, and separately prohibit collecting information from the service by automated means without permission. A login-based checker does both at once: a third party accesses your account and scrapes your lists with a script. Meta's enforcement is graduated — a temporary Action Blocked restriction first, then login challenges and a forced password reset, and for repeated or large-scale activity, account disabling. None of these are theoretical; they are the standard outcomes people describe after a week of using an unfollowers app.

The export is Meta's sanctioned route

The data export exists because privacy law requires it. Data-portability rules under GDPR, the CCPA and similar laws oblige Meta to let you download what it holds about you, and Accounts Centre's Export your information is how it complies. It's the same mechanism that gives you your photos, messages and ad interests; the followers and following lists are one category among them. Meta designed it for you to download, keep, and do what you like with — including reading it with a tool. There is no rule against opening your own file.

If you haven't done it before, how to download your Instagram data export shows every screen, and how to see who doesn't follow you back explains what the files inside contain.

What "no password" means here, precisely

The phrase is used loosely by apps that still want a login "just for verification". Here is what it means on this site:

  • There is no Instagram login form anywhere on unfollow-checker.com, and never a request for your username.
  • No Login with Facebook, Continue with Instagram or any other OAuth flow — nothing connects to your Meta account.
  • No API keys, tokens or sessions — the site holds nothing that could reach Instagram on your behalf.
  • The ZIP is parsed by JavaScript inside your tab and is not transmitted.
  • The only data that leaves your browser is the email address you type at checkout if you buy the $2.99 list, used to send you the CSV. The about page explains why the names cost money and the count doesn't.

How to tell if a tool is lying about this

"No login" and "no password" are now marketing phrases, so test them rather than trusting them. Does the tool ask for your username at all? A username alone is enough to scrape a public profile, which is still automated collection. Does it need the Instagram app installed and logged in on the same phone? That usually means it's reading the app's session. Does it show live follower counts or today's unfollowers? That is impossible without a session — an export-based tool can only show the moment the file was created. We apply these same tests to every tool we review; how we test lists the criteria and the best Instagram unfollow checker roundup shows the results.

What this tool can't do

The password-free design is also the boundary. Without a login there is no way to read anyone else's followers, so this tool only ever checks the account whose export you upload — that limit is the whole point, not a missing feature. It doesn't unfollow for you, since acting on your account would require exactly the access we don't have. And it can't be live; it reads the file Meta generated, and a newer picture needs a newer export. Between two exports, the free who unfollowed me tool shows who left.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it not even ask for my username?

Because it doesn't need it. Your username is already inside the export's filename and JSON, and the comparison is purely between the two lists in the file. Asking for a username would only be useful for fetching data from Instagram, which this tool never does.

Can a tool be "no login" and still show live data?

No. Live counts require an active Instagram session, either yours or one the tool created with your password. If a tool shows today's numbers without an export, it has a session somewhere — and that's the risk you were trying to avoid.

Should I change my password if I used a login-based checker?

Yes. Change it in Instagram, then go to Settings → Security → Login activity and log out of sessions you don't recognise. Revoke any apps under Apps and websites. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it there too.

Does Meta allow reading my own export with a third-party tool?

Yes. The export is your data, provided under data-portability law for you to download and use. Opening the file in a browser-based tool is no different from opening it in a text editor; nothing contacts Instagram.

Is two-factor authentication enough to make login apps safe?

No. An app that asks for your 2FA code is logging in as you at that moment; the code lets it through. Once inside, it holds a session that 2FA no longer protects. 2FA protects against strangers, not against access you grant.

What data do you receive if I pay?

Only the email address you enter at checkout, so we can send the CSV, and the payment itself, handled by the card processor. The export ZIP and the list of names stay in your browser; we never see them.
