See who doesn't follow you back without downloading an app
Short answer
You don't need an unfollowers app. Request your data export inside Instagram, which you already have, download the ZIP in any browser, and open it on UnfollowChecker — a web page that compares the two lists on your device. Nothing is installed, no permissions are granted, and it works the same on an iPhone, an Android phone, a tablet or a computer.
Checking Instagram unfollowers without an app means comparing the followers and following lists from your own Instagram data export on a web page, so nothing is installed and nothing is given access to your account.
How it works
- 1
Ask Instagram for the export
In the Instagram app (or at accountscenter.instagram.com), open Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export. Choose Download to device, tick Followers and following, pick All time and JSON, and start it. That's the only app involved, and you already have it.
- 2
Download the ZIP in your browser
Meta's email arrives in 10–20 minutes with a link that works for four days. Open it in whatever browser you use; the ZIP saves to your downloads folder.
- 3
Open it on unfollow-checker.com
Tap or click the upload area, pick the ZIP, and the count of accounts not following you back appears. Free CSVs of both lists are a tap away; the full list of names is $2.99 once.
No login. No password. Your export never leaves your browser.
Why a web page is enough
The Instagram export is a ZIP of JSON files, and modern browsers can unpack a ZIP and read JSON without any help. UnfollowChecker loads followers_1.json and following.json from the file you choose, builds two lists, and finds the accounts in one but not the other — all inside your tab, with no round trip to a server. There is nothing an installed app could do here that the browser can't.
Because it's a page, it's device-agnostic. We have specific walkthroughs for iPhone, Android and PC or Mac, but the same page also works on an iPad, a Chromebook, a Fire tablet or a work laptop where you aren't allowed to install anything.
What you avoid by not installing
Skipping the app isn't only about convenience. Each of these goes away:
- Storage and clutter — no 80 MB app for a job that takes two minutes a month.
- Permission prompts — a page can't request contacts, notifications, accessibility or overlay access.
- Background activity — nothing keeps running, polling your account or draining battery after you close the tab.
- Auto-renewing trials — no three-day trial that quietly becomes a weekly charge.
- Silent updates — an app can change what it does with each release; a page does what it does the moment you open it, and you can inspect it.
- A stored Instagram session — apps that log in for you keep a session on their servers. There's no session here because there's no login; see whether unfollow checkers are safe.
The one app you still need: Instagram itself
"No app" means no additional app. You still request the export from Instagram, either inside the Instagram app or on the web at accountscenter.instagram.com, which is itself just a page. The export is Meta's own feature, built under data-portability law, and it's the only legitimate source of your complete followers and following lists. How to download your Instagram data export shows every tap; if the email is slow, why an export can take too long explains the realistic waits and what to check.
Doing more than non-followers, still no app
The same export answers the neighbouring questions. The free view includes CSVs of both lists, and a $3 add-on reveals fans (people who follow you that you don't follow back) and mutuals alongside the $2.99 non-follower list. Save two exports a month apart and the free who unfollowed me comparison names who left; keep doing it and you have an unfollowers tracker with no app and no account. The tools index lists every variant, including Threads and TikTok.
Bookmark it instead of installing it
If you want the one-tap convenience of an app, add the page to your home screen. In Safari on iPhone tap the share icon and Add to Home Screen; in Chrome on Android tap the menu and Add to Home screen. You get an icon that opens the page full-screen, and it's still just a page — no permissions, no background process, nothing to uninstall but the icon. Request a fresh export each month, tap the icon, upload, and compare.
What this tool can't do
Not installing anything also means not having access to anything. The page can't reach Instagram, so it can't check any account but the one whose export you give it, and it can't show you a live number — it shows the account as it was when Meta generated the file. It can't unfollow on your behalf either; that would need an app with control over your account, which is exactly the kind you're avoiding. You unfollow by hand in Instagram, at a pace within the unfollow limit.
Frequently asked questions
Does "no app" mean I don't need Instagram installed?
You need access to Instagram to request the export, but that can be the app you already have or the website at accountscenter.instagram.com in a browser. No additional app is installed at any point.
Can I do this on an iPad or Chromebook?
Yes. Any device with a modern browser and a file picker works: iPad Safari, ChromeOS Chrome, Fire tablets, Linux desktops. The export is read locally in the browser.
Is a web tool safer than an app, or just more convenient?
Safer, specifically because a page can't log in as you, can't request device permissions and can't run in the background. Convenience is a side effect; the safety comes from the export method itself.
Will it work offline once the page is loaded?
Yes. The comparison is done in your browser, so you can switch to airplane mode after the page loads and still upload the ZIP and see the count. Checkout naturally needs a connection.
How is this different from the unfollowers apps' "web version"?
Those web versions still ask you to log in with your Instagram credentials and read your account through a session on their server. This page asks for a file, not a login, and never contacts Instagram.
Can I add it to my home screen?
Yes. Use Add to Home Screen in Safari on iPhone or Add to Home screen in Chrome on Android. It opens like an app but remains a page, with no permissions and nothing running in the background.
Ready to check your own account?
Free to see your count. Full list of usernames unlocks for $2.99.
