Instagram unfollow checker for Android (no app needed)
Short answer
On Android the safest Instagram unfollow checker is Chrome plus Instagram's own data export. Ask Instagram for the Followers and following export, tap the link in the email so Chrome saves the ZIP to your Downloads folder, then open UnfollowChecker and pick that ZIP in the file picker. Nothing from the Play Store, nothing sideloaded, no password shared.
An Android Instagram unfollow checker is a way to list accounts that don't follow you back from an Android phone; the method that needs no Play Store app, no sideloaded APK and no password is comparing the followers and following files from your Instagram data export in a browser.
How it works
- 1
Start the export in the Instagram app
In Instagram on your Android phone, go to your profile, tap the three-line menu, then Settings and privacy → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export. Select your profile, choose Download to device, tick Followers and following only, set All time and JSON, and tap Start export. The screens are identical on a Samsung, Pixel or OnePlus because they live inside the Instagram app, not the phone's settings.
- 2
Download the ZIP from the email
Within 10–20 minutes Meta emails a download link that stays valid for four days. Open it in Gmail, tap Download your information, re-enter your Instagram password if Instagram asks, and Chrome saves the file. You'll see a Download complete notification; the ZIP is in the phone's Downloads folder.
- 3
Open UnfollowChecker and pick the file
Go to unfollow-checker.com in Chrome (Samsung Internet and Firefox work too), tap the upload area and Android's system file picker opens. Tap the menu, choose Downloads — or reach it via Files by Google — and select the ZIP whose name starts with
instagram-. - 4
Read the results
The count of people who don't follow you back appears straight away, with a blurred preview and free CSV downloads of both lists. The full list of names is a one-time $2.99 if you want it.
No login. No password. Your export never leaves your browser.
The Play Store and the APK sites
Search the Play Store for Instagram unfollowers and the listings look reassuring: millions of downloads, four-star averages, a Play Protect badge. What they share is the login screen. Each one asks for your Instagram username and password, sends them to the developer's server, and logs in as you from there to read your lists. That login — from a server in another country, with no device fingerprint Instagram recognises — is the single most reliable way to earn a suspicious-login challenge or an Action Blocked message.
Android adds a route iPhones don't have: sideloading. Forum threads and video descriptions hand out APK files for "unlocked" or "pro" unfollower apps. Installing one means tapping through the Allow from this source warning and switching off the only scan Play Protect would have run. Whatever that APK contains, it now has your Instagram password and a foothold on your phone. We don't name individual apps here, because the pattern is consistent enough that the names don't matter.
Permissions to watch for before you tap Install
An app whose entire job is to compare two lists needs no special permissions. If an unfollowers app asks for any of these during setup, that's a reason to stop:
- Accessibility Service — lets the app read what's on screen and tap for you. That's how "auto unfollow" works, and automated taps are exactly what Instagram's detection is built to catch.
- Display over other apps — used for floating buttons that drive the Instagram app while it's open.
- Contacts — nothing about your followers list is in your phone's contacts.
- Notification access — can read every notification on the phone, including two-factor codes.
- Unrestricted battery / run in background — lets the app keep working on your account when you're not looking at it.
- A web page can't request any of these. Chrome will only ever ask you to pick a file, and the file picker gives the page a copy of that one ZIP and nothing else.
Browser route on Android step by step (Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox)
In Chrome, tapping the upload area opens Android's standard document picker, with Recent files first and a side menu for Downloads, Images and any cloud drives you've connected. Samsung Internet on Galaxy phones opens My Files instead, where the ZIP is under Downloads or Internal storage → Download. Firefox uses the same system picker as Chrome. In each case the browser reads the ZIP locally, unpacks followers_1.json and following.json, and compares them without a network request; you can confirm this by switching to airplane mode after the page loads and uploading anyway.
This works on Android 9 and newer, which covers nearly every phone still receiving updates. There is nothing to do with Allow from this source, Play Protect scans or storage permissions — a web page gets none of those, so there's nothing to grant and nothing to revoke later.
Reading the results on a phone screen
The free view gives you the number of non-followers, a blurred preview and two CSV buttons for your complete followers and following lists with follow dates. On Android a tapped CSV opens in Google Sheets or whichever spreadsheet app you have, where you can sort by date and scroll comfortably; a handful of accounts you followed in 2017 and forgot about usually rises to the top. The full non-follower list with usernames costs $2.99 once, and we email it to you as a CSV so it's easy to come back to on a bigger screen.
If you'd rather just have the raw lists, exporting your following list is free, and the followers vs following page explains what the two numbers mean side by side. A $3 add-on at checkout adds fans and mutuals if you want all three directions.
If the export email hasn't arrived
Gmail on Android often files Meta's email under the Updates or Promotions tab rather than Primary, so check there first. You don't actually need the email: go back to Export your information in Accounts Centre and the finished export is listed there with its own download button for four days. Larger accounts, or exports where you accidentally ticked more than Followers and following, take longer; our guide on Instagram exports taking too long lists the realistic waits, and how to download your Instagram data export walks through every screen with the option names Instagram currently uses.
What this tool can't do
Three limits worth knowing before you start. The export has to come from the account you're signed in to, so there's no way to check a friend's or a rival's non-followers. The tool shows the list and stops — it never unfollows for you, because that's the automation that gets Android accounts flagged. And the list is a snapshot from the moment Meta built the file; it won't update until you request another export. For who unfollowed you over time, upload two exports to the free who unfollowed me tool.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a safe unfollowers APK for Android?
Not one we'd recommend. An APK outside the Play Store skips Play Protect, and every unfollowers app — store or sideloaded — needs your Instagram password to work. The export method in a browser needs no APK and no password.
Where does Chrome save the Instagram export on Android?
In the phone's Downloads folder. You'll see a Download complete notification; in the file picker tap the menu and choose Downloads, or open Files by Google → Downloads. Samsung Internet saves to the same place, visible in My Files.
Does it work in Samsung Internet or Firefox?
Yes. Both open a file picker that can reach Downloads, and both run the comparison locally in the browser. Samsung Internet uses My Files for picking; Chrome and Firefox use Android's system picker.
What permissions does this need on Android?
None. A web page can't ask for Accessibility, overlay, contacts or notification access. The only prompt is the file picker, which gives the page a copy of the single ZIP you choose.
Can I open the CSV on my phone?
Yes. Tapping the free followers or following CSV opens it in Google Sheets, Excel or any spreadsheet app installed on your phone. Sort by the date column to find your oldest follows.
Does a Play Store listing mean the app is safe?
It means the app passed Google's policy review, which doesn't cover what the developer's server does with your Instagram password or whether logging in from there will get your account blocked. Store presence isn't a safety guarantee.
Ready to check your own account?
Free to see your count. Full list of usernames unlocks for $2.99.
