UnfollowChecker vs Unfolks

Short answer

Unfolks is a free Chrome extension that opens alongside instagram.com, reads your followers and following through your logged-in session, and shows who doesn't follow you back with one-click and bulk unfollow. UnfollowChecker is a web page that reads the data export Instagram emails you, in any browser, and never interacts with your account. Unfolks is faster and free; UnfollowChecker is safer, works on phones, and also shows unfollowers, fans, mutuals and CSVs.

Unfolks runs inside your logged-in Instagram tab and unfollows from the same screen, which is exactly why it can get you action-blocked; UnfollowChecker takes a few minutes longer to start and never touches your session.

Where Unfolks is stronger

  • Completely free with no upsell.
  • Instant — no export request, no 10–20 minute wait.
  • Filters verified accounts out and lets you search the list by handle.
  • Unfollow from the same screen without opening each profile.

What to weigh up

  • Runs inside your logged-in instagram.com session and pulls your lists through the same internal web endpoints the site uses — no password typed, but every request is made as you, from your browser.
  • Offers one-click and bulk unfollow from the extension; automated unfollowing is explicitly against Instagram's terms and is the most common cause of "Action Blocked".
  • The site says actions are paced to stay inside Instagram's limits, but those limits are undocumented and change; pacing is a guess.
  • Chrome only (and Chromium browsers) — no phone, no Safari, no Firefox.
  • No unfollower tracking, history, whitelist or export; it answers one question (who doesn't follow back) and nothing else.

How each one works

Unfolks installs from the Chrome Web Store and runs while you're logged into instagram.com. It never asks you to type a password — it doesn't need to, because it borrows the session your browser already has. It fetches your following and followers lists through the same internal web endpoints instagram.com uses for its own pages, compares them locally, and shows the non-followers with filters for verified accounts and a search box. You can then unfollow individually or in bulk from the extension. There is no account, no payment and no upsell. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc and other Chromium browsers, and nowhere else.

UnfollowChecker never connects to your account. You ask Instagram for your own data (Accounts Centre → Export your information → Followers and following, JSON, All time), Instagram emails you a ZIP in roughly 10–20 minutes, and you drop that ZIP on this site. The comparison runs in your browser tab; the file is never uploaded. The count is free, the followers and following CSVs are free, and the two-export unfollowers comparison is free. The full list of who doesn't follow you back is a one-time $2.99, with fans and mutuals a $3 add-on.

Safety and account risk

No password is typed, but every request Unfolks makes is made as you, from your browser, against endpoints Instagram built for its own web app. Reading your lists that way is a mild version of what login apps do; Instagram's rate limits apply and a large account can trip them. The real risk is the unfollow button. Automated unfollowing is explicitly against Instagram's terms, and a run of unfollows from a browser extension is the textbook cause of Action Blocked. Unfolks says its actions are paced to stay inside Instagram's limits, and it may be right on a given day, but those limits are undocumented and change without notice. We treat extensions that act on your account as a separate category from ones that only read, and explain why on how we test.

UnfollowChecker sends no requests to Instagram. It reads two JSON files that Instagram produced and you downloaded. There is nothing to rate-limit. If you decide to unfollow people from the list, you do it by hand in the app, at a pace that keeps you under the unfollow limit.

What you get

Unfolks answers one question: who doesn't follow me back. It does it instantly and lets you act on the answer immediately. It does not track who unfollowed you over time, does not show fans or mutuals, keeps no history, has no whitelist, and has no export. If you want to re-check next month, you open it again and get a fresh list, with no memory of the last one.

UnfollowChecker shows the non-followers list, fans, mutuals, free CSV downloads of both lists with follow dates, and who unfollowed you between two exports. It does not unfollow for you and never will — that is the line between a tool that reads and a tool that acts. It also reads Threads and TikTok exports, and it runs on a phone, which an extension can't.

Price

Unfolks is entirely free: no trial, no paid tier, no card. That's a genuine point in its favour and there is no asterisk on it.

UnfollowChecker's count, CSV downloads and two-export unfollowers comparison are free. The full non-followers list is $2.99 once; fans and mutuals are $3 more. If the only thing you want is the non-followers list and you're on a desktop, Unfolks is cheaper by $2.99 — the question is whether you want the extension sitting in your session.

When Unfolks is the better choice

Choose Unfolks if you're on a desktop, you want the list right now, you'd rather pay nothing, and you're comfortable with an extension reading your logged-in session. It is a good fit for a small account where the list is short, the unfollows are few, and a temporary action block would be an annoyance rather than a problem. Use the unfollow button sparingly — a handful at a time, not the whole list.

When UnfollowChecker is the better choice

Choose UnfollowChecker if you're on a phone, if you don't want a third-party extension in your Instagram session, if you have a large account where an extension is likely to hit rate limits, or if you want more than the one list — unfollowers over time, fans, mutuals, CSVs, Threads, TikTok. It is the option we'd pick for an account you care about. For the extension category in general, see Instagram unfollowers Chrome extensions.

Frequently asked questions

Does Unfolks need my Instagram password?

No. It runs inside your browser while you're logged into instagram.com and uses that existing session to read your lists. You never type a password into the extension, but every request it makes is made as you.

Can Unfolks get my account action-blocked?

Reading your lists is low risk. Bulk unfollowing from the extension is what gets accounts blocked — automated unfollowing is against Instagram's terms, and a burst of unfollows from a browser is the classic trigger. If you use it, unfollow a few at a time.

Is Unfolks really free?

Yes. There is no trial, no paid tier and no card required. UnfollowChecker's count and CSV downloads are also free; its full non-followers list is a one-time $2.99.

Does Unfolks work on my phone?

No. It is a Chrome extension and needs a desktop Chromium browser. UnfollowChecker is a web page that works on iPhone and Android in the browser, with nothing installed.

Does Unfolks show who unfollowed me?

No. It shows who doesn't follow you back right now and keeps no history. UnfollowChecker compares two data exports to show who unfollowed you in between, free.
