InstaFollow alternative (no password, no app)
Short answer
InstaFollow (InstaFollow Followers Reports on the App Store) is a small login-based tracker with weekly, monthly and yearly premium plans that reviews describe as buying very little. The alternative is to stop paying for lists you already own: Instagram's export contains them, and UnfollowChecker compares them in your browser with no login — free count, free CSVs, $2.99 once for the full list.
An InstaFollow alternative is a tool that shows which Instagram accounts don't follow you back without signing in to your account through a third-party app, usually by reading the followers and following files in your official Instagram data export.
How it works
- 1
Stop InstaFollow's billing and access
On iPhone open Settings → your name → Subscriptions and cancel InstaFollow Premium; the weekly plan renews until you do. In Instagram, change your password under Accounts Centre → Password and security, end unknown sessions under Where you're logged in, and remove the app under Settings and privacy → Website permissions → Apps and websites.
- 2
Request your export from Instagram
In the Instagram app: profile → menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export → Download to device. Tick only Followers and following, set the date range to All time and the format to JSON, then start the export.
- 3
Wait for the email and download the ZIP
A followers-only export is usually ready in 10–20 minutes. Instagram emails a download link (valid for four days) and also shows it under Export your information. Save the ZIP to the device you'll use for the check.
- 4
Open the ZIP on UnfollowChecker
Upload the ZIP here. The lists are compared by your browser and never sent anywhere. The non-follower count is free and so are your followers and following CSVs; the full named list is $2.99, once, with nothing recurring.
No login. No password. Your export never leaves your browser.
Why people leave InstaFollow
InstaFollow is a newer, smaller entry in the iPhone follower-tracker category, with a few dozen App Store ratings at the time of checking and premium plans at $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Like the rest of the category it connects to your Instagram account from inside the app; there's no export or username-only mode. At those prices a year of InstaFollow costs twenty times a one-time export-based list.
The complaints are about value more than drama. Reviews mention that premium "unlocks everything" but everything turns out to be basic lists with no way to act on them, no charts and no real analytics. Reviews mention paying for a year and finding the account gone the next month, and being charged without the service working. Reviews mention battery drain while the app polls in the background. And reviews mention the pattern common to every login tracker: being logged out of Instagram after use and asked to change the password. The InstaFollow vs UnfollowChecker page sets the two out feature by feature; this page is the exit route.
Before you leave: three things to do
A weekly plan is the most expensive kind to forget about, so do the billing step today:
- Cancel in Subscriptions. iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → InstaFollow → Cancel Subscription. If you were charged for a period in which the app didn't work, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com — Apple handles it, not the developer.
- Change your Instagram password in Accounts Centre → Password and security, then open Where you're logged in and log out of anything you don't recognise. Reusing that password elsewhere? Change it there too.
- Revoke the app under Settings and privacy → Website permissions → Apps and websites, then delete it from your phone so it stops polling.
The three best InstaFollow alternatives
What InstaFollow actually delivered — a list of non-followers and a list of recent unfollowers — is exactly what the export contains, so the first alternative is a straight replacement. The other two cover the things an app did that a web page won't.
UnfollowChecker (same lists, no login, no plan)
Opens your export ZIP in the browser and shows who doesn't follow you back. The count is free, your raw followers and following CSVs are free, and comparing two exports for who unfollowed me is free; the full non-follower list is $2.99 once — about one week of InstaFollow. There's an optional $3 add-on for the fans and mutuals lists if you want those as named CSVs too. No app, no password, nothing uploaded.
UnfollowCheck (if you want a native app with alerts)
UnfollowCheck — a different company at unfollowcheck.com, not this site — is a native iPhone app with a web companion that tracks your account by public username rather than by login. It's a good fit if the thing you'll miss is tapping an icon on your phone: it reads your public profile, keeps snapshots, and pushes a notification when someone unfollows you, with no password involved.
It suits a public account that wants alerts and doesn't mind a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription. It can't see private accounts, so if yours is private the export method above is the one that works. The full comparison goes feature by feature.
Unfolks (if you wanted an unfollow button next to each name)
InstaFollow didn't let you unfollow from the list, which reviews complain about. Unfolks, a free Chrome extension, does — it reads your lists from your logged-in instagram.com tab and offers paced bulk unfollowing. It never asks for a password, but it calls Instagram's private endpoints from your session, so it carries the automation risk that export tools avoid; reviews mention loading and connection failures. Read the Chrome extension page before installing one.
How the export method works instead
InstaFollow's premium screens were a view of two lists it pulled from your account. The export gives you the same two lists directly from Meta: request Followers and following in JSON from Accounts Centre (every tap is in the steps above), wait 10–20 minutes for the email, and download the ZIP. UnfollowChecker reads following.json and the followers_*.json parts in your browser tab and shows the difference. The count appears before you've paid anything, and the free Instagram unfollow checker page sets out precisely what stays free each time.
There's no background polling because there's no connection — which is also why it can't drain a battery, trigger a login challenge or show up in Instagram's Action Blocked enforcement.
What you lose by switching
Honestly, less than with most apps, because InstaFollow's own reviews say its premium tier offered little beyond the lists. What you do lose: the app refreshing by itself (you request an export instead), a running unfollowers feed (you compare two exports), and the per-account history InstaFollow kept while you were subscribed. If you want fans and mutuals as named lists, that's a $3 add-on rather than part of the $2.99. What you gain is an exact answer, no password anywhere, and a bill that doesn't come back next Friday.
What this tool can't do
It can't refresh on its own; a new picture needs a new export. It can't notify you. It can't look at any account except the one whose export you upload. It can't unfollow for you, and it has no opinion on who you should unfollow — should you unfollow people who don't follow back is a separate question. Everything it does is listed under how we test, with the same limits applied to every tool we review.
Frequently asked questions
What does InstaFollow Premium actually include?
At the time of checking, premium unlocked the app's full lists — non-followers, unfollowers and similar — at $4.99 a week, $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Reviews mention that it adds no unfollow tools, charts or analytics beyond those lists.
Is a weekly subscription cheaper than paying once?
Only for a single week. InstaFollow's $4.99 weekly plan costs more than UnfollowChecker's one-time $2.99 full list after the first renewal, and a month of it costs more than three exports' worth of lists.
Why did InstaFollow drain my battery?
Reviews mention battery drain, which is consistent with an app keeping an Instagram session alive and polling your lists in the background. An export-based check runs once, in a browser tab, and has nothing running afterwards.
Does the export include fans and mutuals too?
Yes, the same two files give all three directions: who doesn't follow you back, who follows you that you don't follow back (fans), and mutuals. The non-follower list is $2.99; fans and mutuals as named CSVs are an optional $3 add-on.
Can I get an export on Android or a PC, not just iPhone?
Yes. Accounts Centre is the same on Android, in the Instagram app, and at accountscenter.instagram.com in any browser. The ZIP opens on UnfollowChecker from a phone or a computer.
Ready to check your own account?
Free to see your count. Full list of usernames unlocks for $2.99.
